Pupils at St Benedict’s Catholic High School in Whitehaven will be keeping their green fingers, thanks to a new greenhouse donated by Hertel based at Sellafield.
Storeman Trevor Hull brought the need for a replacement greenhouse to his colleague’s attention after hearing a storm damaged the original structure from his wife, Sharon, who works at the school.
A team of seven Hertel managers spent five nights preparing the site and installing the new greenhouse, which will now be used by pupils to grow seedlings and learn about plants.
Hertel has worked at the Sellafield site for the last 23 years, providing multi-discipline services involving a broad range of maintenance tasks including the removal of asbestos from site, painting, access services, insulation and scaffolding.
Alan Blackwood, Site Manager at Hertel, explains: “Many of the team have been based at Sellafield for a number of years and we had talked about giving something back to the community where we work.
“When Trevor told us of the damage that the school’s greenhouse had sustained in the bad weather, we were all really keen to help put up the replacement structure.”
Mary Lowrey, Headteacher at St Benedict’s School, says: “The children learn a lot from growing their own plants and were very upset when our previous greenhouse was damaged in the storm.
“We were delighted when Hertel offered to build the replacement structure. Just a few evenings of their staff’s time will bring enjoyment to pupils at the school for years to come.”
