Proud to be part of Pearl
On 22nd November, Hertel was privileged to attend the inauguration of the Pearl GTL plant in Qatar.
The project was officially inaugurated by HH the Emir, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, escorted by HE the Deputy Premier and Chairman of Emiri Diwan, Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah. Also in attendance were Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, Charles Hendry, UK Minister of Energy and HE Frederik Korthals Altes, Minister of State for the Netherlands.
Shell were represented by Peter Voser, CEO, Qatar President Andy Brown, and Jorma Olilla, Executive Chairman.
Having been involved in the construction phase, and since then maintenance, Hertel’s Lee McLean Marshall (Country Director Qatar) and Jason Pearce (Site Manager) attended the event.
Pearl GTL has been a huge project, and holds a number of world records. Besides being the world’s largest gas-to-liquids plant, Pearl GTL has the world’s largest capacity to produce premium quality lubricant base oils.
The hydro-cracking capacity, oxygen production, recovery and reuse of process water system, instrumentation and control system, steam generation capacity and the hydrocarbon processing plant are all the largest in the world.
Jason Pearce, Hertel’s site manager reflects “It’s hard to imagine how many people have applied their energy, skills, dedication and commitment towards achieving this goal. Hertel have been part of this project now for over four years, and hopefully many more to come as we continue with the maintenance of this huge plant.”
At its peak, over 52,000 workers were on site, which has gone from ground-breaking to formal inauguration in just nine years.
“We can be proud of the scale of our achievement; its size, its complexity, its technology,” adds Jason, “but most of all we should be proud of the way we achieved it: with an absolute focus on safety, underpinned by a value of care for our people.
“The project has also been another example of Hertel’s commitment to Strength in Partnership. The spirit of teamwork between ourselves, Shell and other contractors has shone throughout the project, helping to make it a success.”

Major nuclear decommissioning win for Hertel in the UK
Multi-discipline construction and maintenance company Hertel has won a five-year framework contract as part of the Celadon Alliance for deplanting, demolition and asbestos (DD&A) removal across 10 Magnox power station sites.

On 25 November 2011 ERIKS NV and Hertel Holding BV have reached agreement on the transfer of the shares of Hertel Industrial Sealings effective as per the same date.
Top marks for safety in Holland
In 2010, the Hertel team at the ExxonMobil refinery in Rotterdam achieved top marks for complying with the company’s stringent safety standards.
