Jamie scoops top apprentice award

Jamie Gill, who works at Sellafield in the UK, has been named ‘Apprentice of the Year’ at Lakes College annual awards ceremony in Lillyhall, West Cumbria.

Sixteen-year-old Jamie, who is in the first year of his apprenticeship with the industrial services company Hertel, was nominated by Lakes College instructor, Clive Bell. He was selected as the winner for an outstanding academic and workplace performance.

At Hertel Jamie is employed on the decommissioning project at Sellafield nuclear site. He works across a range of services including mark outs, welding, drilling and downsizing, using complex industrial equipment such as reciprocating saws and oxy-propane and plasma arc hot cutting tools.

On completion of the three-year apprenticeship programme, Jamie will gain an NVQ Level 3 qualification in Fabrication and Welding.

The ceremony coincided with National Apprenticeship Week and was held in conjunction with Copeland Apprenticeship Initiative, of which Lakes College, Copeland Borough Council, Inspira and PHX are partners.

Des Graves, Hertel’s Decommissioning Manager at Sellafield, said: “In his first year of training at Lakes College Jamie has already demonstrated a clear grasp of the fundamentals of fabrication. He is a credit to Hertel and I am sure he will develop into a first class engineer.”
