Hertel gears up for a greener future

Hertel is looking to drive forward its carbon footprint campaign with the pilot of a new electric vehicle.

Based at Hertel’s Wilton workshop in Middlesbrough, UK, the Renault Kangoo Van Z.E will replace one of the company’s old diesel vans to transport staff, maintenance tools and plant equipment across the site.

Hertel recently calculated its carbon footprint in the UK and identified fuel consumption as a pivotal point for reduction. It was felt the introduction of an electric vehicle, which produces no direct harmful emissions, would be most beneficial in minimising the company’s impact on the environment.

Powered 100 per cent by electricity, the Renault Kangoo Van Z.E. does away with the need for traditional fossil fuels and can be charged overnight using the normal mains supply.

Wilton is the first Hertel site to trial an electric vehicle. The aim is to roll out the scheme to other locations in the UK and Ireland, which could result in a substantial reduction in the company’s C02 production.

The Wilton International site is home to a number of sustainable energy initiatives, including Europe’s largest bio-refinery, and the UK’s first large scale biomass power station saving 200,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Adrian Swan, Site Commercial Manager, says: “A constant need to transport heavy equipment means that Hertel can easily rack up the miles on a single site. The electric van will make these necessary journeys more cost effective and with a reduced impact on the environment. I was pleasantly surprised to find it drives just like a normal road vehicle and believe it will play an integral part in our carbon management strategy.”

Phil Bailey, Director for Hertel UK and Ireland, adds: “Fuel consumption is both damaging to the environment and a costly company outlay, so we’re exploring new alternatives such as electric vehicles to reduce our carbon footprint.”
