Major contract successfully completed in the UAE
AMBHertel LLC have successfully completed their first major contract in the UAE with the completion of the Naptha Hydro-treater Reformer contract on the Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) plant at Jebel Ali, Dubai.
ENOC began commissioning units at the plant in December after completion of the $850 million overhaul that was originally scheduled for completion in September 2008. The upgrade will allow ENOC to convert naphtha to reformate, and give it capacity to produce 40,000 bpd of the gasoline component. The upgrade, which has added a reformer and a hydrotreater to the plant, as well as tie-ins to existing processes, will give a full refinery capacity of 120,000 bpd.
AMB-Hertel, a joint venture between Hertel ME and Al Masaood Bergum was awarded a contract for the provision of scaffolding and insulation services by Dutco McConnell Dowell (Australia) in July 2007 after the new venture was recommended by long term group customer, Foster Wheeler UK Ltd (Owners Representative). Work started in August 2007 and has seen a peak of more than 300 men working over a two year period resulting in over 750,000 man-hours, more than 3500 erected scaffolds, including 5km of pipe-racks and over 25,000 m2 of hot insulation.
Foster Wheeler Project Director Colin Walker: "AMB-Hertel have performed to the high safety and operational standards Foster Wheeler would expect. They have completed approximately 25,000 m2 of insulation to our required standard under difficult circumstances and installed scaffolding which again has been to the highest standard. Their performance has ensured that mechanical completion commitments have been achieved."
Jebel Ali is the smallest of four refineries in the UAE. The largest is the Ruwais plant run by the refining unit of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and has a capacity of 415,000 bpd. AMB-Hertel are currently progressing works on an expansion of this refinery through contracts with Tecnimont SpA (Italy) and Samsung Engineering (Korea) on the Borouge 2 project. The total scope of work on these contracts includes 100,000 m2 of thermal and cold insulation, scaffolding and 60,000 m2 of surface preparation, painting and passive fire protection.
In November AMB-Hertel were awarded their first maintenance contract with the signing of a two year contract with the Al Taweelah Power Company (TAPCO) for provision of access for maintenance and overhauls at the Taweelah B power Station, Abu Dhabi.
Lee Thompson, Country Manager: “In the two years since the award of the ENOC contract, AMB-Hertel has achieved sustainable growth and development that has given a solid foundation for our target of becoming the premier multi-discipline service provider in the UAE. This could only have been achieved with the full commitment of the AMB-Hertel staff, including dedicated support from Raghu Veer Singh (Regional Business Development Manager). Through this hard work and our performances on ENOC and other contracts, we are developing long-term relationships with key EPC and Mechanical customers, enhancing our reputation as a contractor that can be trusted to deliver and perform, with a focus on quality, safety and meeting contractual obligations”
Further milestones in the AMB-Hertel’s growth have been achieved with the completion of over 2 million man hours without a lost time Incident. During this time, the company peaked at over 800 employees, comprising 8 nationalities.
In December 2009, AMB-Hertel achieved ISO 9001:2008 status after an extensive audit by Bureau Veritas. With support from the Middle East team and a lot of hard work by Jonathon Daines (HSEQ Manager), AMB-Hertel have been accredited for the provision of thermal, cryogenic and acoustic insulation; erection, dismantling and hire of scaffolding; surface preparation and application of protective coatings; passive fire protection and refractory linings.
