Paula Pattison - Middlesbrough, UK
Paula, 43, lives in Hartburn, a very green suburb of Stockton On Tees, which lies four miles north of Middlesbrough.
“My favourite thing about Hartburn is its proximity to industrial Teesside. If I were to drive five minutes from my home, I would be faced with two very differing landscapes. To the west a patchwork of fields which stretches for miles. To the East the seascape of industrial Teesside, which spreads as far as the eye can see. Cooling towers, chemical plants and a nuclear power station dominate the landscape.”

This landscape also includes the infamous Transporter Bridge, which is a well known symbol of Teesside.

“This view moves me each time I see it. It forms the basis of the region’s prosperity and that of Hertel’s equally successful presence in this region. A source of 60 to 70 years of almost guaranteed employment for local people, it is home to me and not a scar on the landscape as viewed by people outside of Teesside.”
Paula is Contracts Commercial Coordinator and loves the diversity of task this role offers.

The three things Paula likes about Hertel are “the diversity of disciplines, from asbestos removal to nuclear decommissioning, and not really knowing what I may be tasked with next. The ability to provide support to the business units within the UK as required and, of course, the appreciation and friendship of the people I meet during the course of my every day.”

Looking ahead, she says: “I have been chosen to train as a Six Sigma black belt for Hertel (UK). The training usually takes between four to six months. During this time, I will gradually phase out my involvement in the commercial department and, once trained will take up this role full time. Six Sigma is project orientated, so in five years I hope to have established Six Sigma as an integrated and very saleable part of the business here in the UK. I will be working within all business units to assist the potential green and yellow belts which will take Six Sigma forward on sites and within all areas of the UK.”
