Working in unusual circumstances
Hertel has recently undertaken a unique project for DSM in Geleen, Netherlands. At first sight there was nothing particularly unusual about this job, but the opposite turned out to be true.
We were commissioned to dismount and mount the insulation of an ammonia tank for the twelve-year periodic inspection by Röntgen Technische Dienst. At first sight there was nothing particularly unusual about this job – except for the fact that it had to be carried out while the tank was still in use.
To our knowledge this was the first time that an ammonia tank had been inspected whilst still in operation. Normally, these inspections take place inside the unit, with all the ammonia being removed from the tank and then scaffolding being erected around it. This method not only causes production to be shut down for around four months, it also involves significant environmental and safety risks. Moreover, the ‘old’ method of inspection is bad for the tank, because when it is opened oxygen is drawn inwards, which may lead to stress corrosion. The cost benefits are also substantial if the inspection can be carried out without interrupting production: you can easily save one million euros. Therefore things had to be done differently, thought DSM.

Hertel is growing steadily worldwide. This includes Romania, where a Romanian branch of Hertel Industrial Services has been operational since January of last year, alongside the Hertel location in Lithuania which has been running for eleven years.
