Civil
The civils expertise delivered by Hertel covers a diverse array of sectors and applications, from asbestos removal, to building construction projects and maintenance, to the design and installation of water systems and water treatment.
In Brussels, Belgium, for instance, Hertel have recently completed a €22m contract for the Asbestos stripping, fireproofing, and renovation of the 35 storey Finance Tower.
After a year of engineering/prepping, a work interval of four storeys was opted for. This ensured that simultaneously four storeys were in the stripping phase, four in the asbestos removal phase, four in post-stripping, four in TEM measurement, four in fireproofing and four in renovation.
The project was given the tight timeline of 14 months. To prevent delays to further renovation, this timeline had to be followed to the letter. The project involved the removal of asbestos from very large zones. To keep these zones under sub-pressure, special sub-pressure devices were developed (8 units at 100,000 m3/h) equipped with noise mufflers (the maximum permitted noise level being 40 dBa in Brussels). Due to the large amount of waste (2,500 tonnes) debris chutes were installed, directly depositing the asbestos waste into closed shipping containers. This way there was no risk involved in transfer between the debris chutes and the waste containers.
Because we were involved in the development phase of this project, from the outset a large number of matters were able to be arranged for both the asbestos removal and the renovation (such as the use of construction elevators, shafts, electrical installation) with a positive effect on completion time and costs for this project.
Simultaneously processing four storeys and employing sufficiently experienced workers kept the project kept within the tight timeframe set for it. The inspection measurements indicated that both the regulatory standards as well as those of the client had been met with no problem.
On industrial sites, Hertel offer the capability and expertise involved in establishing temporary contractors villages. A complete scope of service is offered here, including procurement, groundwork preparation, installation inclusive of services provision (power, water, drainage etc.), maintenance and dismantling.
Projects are managed from conception to completion under Construction design and Management regulations (CDM).
Hertel’s civils capability extends to major construction works to existing plant buildings (control rooms/workshops etc.) to ensure compliance with blast protection legislation. For maintenance and refurbishment, our expertise in all aspects of facilities engineering (PAT, IEE routines, HVAC installation and maintenance) can be relied upon as well as layout modifications, electrical installation and so on.
Meanwhile, our Solutions business unit specialises in the provision of safe, hygienic water supplies in the health, leisure and public residential sectors. Expertise provided includes the design, development and delivery of complete water systems including electrical works, often in environments that are highly sensitive to any kind of disruption (such as hospitals) with minimum disruption.
Hertel Solutions implements building management systems to allow for remote monitoring to safeguard the safety of the water supplies. Risk assessments are carried out using innovative new technology giving clients real-time data on their assets, protecting the public.
