1200 tonne platform gives rise to shared sense of pride

The brand-new PL-G16a-PB drilling platform belonging to GDF Suez was by far the principal attraction at the Open Day held by the construction company Mercon.

At its headquarters in Gorinchem, the company organised an exciting day for the family, friends and acquaintances of Mercon and all of its contractors.

Hertel regularly carries out large-scale construction projects at Mercon. As part of the PL-G16a-PB platform for GDF Suez, Hertel's offshore division constructed the Living Quarter and the Power Module. Thanks to some tight scheduling, the eight-month project was successfully completed. "It was a considerable challenge to get everything finished in time. Both projects were running alongside one another and they had to be completed and tested, before the project moved to the Mercon site,” explained the project manager, Lando Bax.

An unmanned working platform at sea
The PL-G16a-PB is a satellite platform. This means that except during the commissioning phase, in the event of faults or when carrying out maintenance, the platform is normally unmanned. The platform consists of four levels and rises 23 metres above sea level. On the cellar deck are the pipes that enter the sea for the extraction of gas. On the deck above is the drilling installation that is capable of drilling at various angles for gas. Several flights of stairs above are the Living Quarters that are capable of accommodating twelve to fourteen people. On the same level is also the loading bay where goods can be offloaded. On the roof is a heli-deck that enables the crew to access and leave the platform.

Once it leaves the construction yard, the platform will be shipped to its final destination in the North Sea.
