Insulation has been Hertel’s core expertise since 1895. Today, we have invested in specialist off-site fabrication facilities for optimal quality control and efficiency.

Industrial Thermal Insulation

Next to raw materials, energy represents the largest single cost element of most manufacturing processes.

Hertel recognise thermal insulation as a valuable investment and a tremendous asset to energy conservation and process efficiency. Properly maintained insulation contributes significantly to a plant’s operating bottom line, in turn helping to reduce CO2 emissions, carbon footprint and operating costs.

An average sized plant has around:

60 miles of insulated pipe work
The equivalent of 7 football fields of insulated equipment
Between 10% & 19% of damaged/ missing insulation
Many historically un-insulated hot (useful energy) processes.

Therefore, significant untapped energy saving potential exists. Quantifying this damaged or missing insulation and calculating the associated energy loss is a unique service offered by Hertel.

When the costs to carry out the repairs/ improvements are compared to the cost of energy lost per annum, a return on investment (ROI) can be worked out, allowing prioritisation of the repairs for the greatest return.

Typically on process temperatures above 100°C the ROI is over 100%, providing a payback in less than 12 months, but more importantly the energy savings are realised year on year while the insulation remains fit for purpose (circa 15 yrs +).

Since the introduction of this service Hertel have identified significant energy savings for our customers resulting in reduced operating costs longterm, reduced CO2 emissions, reduced carbon footprint, reduced climate change levy burdens and improved environmental performance.

European Industrial Insulation Foundation (EiiF)
Hertel is a founding partner of the European Industrial Insulation Foundation (EiiF), a non-profit foundation located in Geneva, Switzerland.
The initiative is made up of Europe’s leading insulation companies to promote the benefits of sustainability and profitability of industrial insulation, not just to plant operators but also to raise awareness amongst investors and government organisations, about the contribution industrial insulation makes to energy efficiency and CO2 reduction, while delivering a typical payback time of just one or two years.
