Award for apprenticeships at Boscombe Down

Hertel’s apprenticeship training programme at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) Boscombe Down aircraft testing facility has been awarded Apprenticeship Medium Employer of the Year by Wiltshire College.

The company was presented with the award by Nick Hewer, Lord Sugar’s adviser from BBC’s The Apprentice at its annual apprenticeship awards.

Three Hertel employees have been working through their apprenticeships at Boscombe Down. Apprentices work four days a week on-site and spend one day a week studying at college. Liam Edwards, Terence Castle and Luke Nicklen, all from Salisbury, are studying towards NVQ Level Two carpentry, plumbing and painting qualifications respectively.

Simon Castle, Site Manager at MoD Boscombe Down, said: “This is an award for everyone at Hertel who is involved in our apprenticeships, and especially the apprentices themselves. Two were hired into the apprenticeship scheme to meet operational needs at Boscombe Down, and one was placed on to the scheme after proving his capabilities.

Nick Hewer said: “Apprenticeships are a great way to develop staff, and I am glad to hear Hertel plans to continue the good work it is doing with its apprenticeship training into the future. The achievements of the apprentices at Hertel demonstrate the importance of this support.”

The event was held at Wiltshire College in Trowbridge on February 10.
