Hertel scores twice at Bayer Antwerp
Bayer Antwerp appointed Hertel as the general contractor for the shutdown of its Aniline plant that is scheduled to take place this autumn. Next to that, Hertel was awarded a four year contract for all trace heating maintenance work at the Antwerp plant.
During the Aniline shutdown, Hertel will be responsible for coordinating all of the necessary disciplines: Hertel will carry out the piping, tracing, insulation and scaffolding work itself.
“We were also responsible for coordinating the previous shutdown of the Aniline plant (in 2010). But the scale of this shutdown is however much larger,” says Johny Dedobbelaer, who will once again have responsibility for managing the project.
“During the course of this shutdown, various interlinked components will be closed down for a period of three weeks. In that time, we will be required to replace a large number of pipelines and shut-off valves. We will be working in very delicate conditions, using high-quality pipelines. The important thing for us will be to put a strong team in place.”

Marc Belmans, Director of Hertel Mechanical explains: “The technical staff at Bayer were extremely satisfied with the work that we did during the previous shutdown. Johnny certainly made an impression, as they especially asked for him to be responsible for managing the project again this time around. I estimate that during the three week period of the shutdown, we will have around 130 people working for us on site. Seventy-five of those will be engaged in piping work, around twenty in insulation and scaffolding and a further ten people in carrying out the tracing work.”
Bayer has appointed Hertel for all trace heating jobs at the Antwerp plant. The contract includes all maintenance and newly built steam tracing. “This contract is a well deserved reward for the team at Bayer Antwerp,” says Marc. “I believe we have done a very good job. Congratulations to the team and good luck with the shutdown.”
