Gorgon is go!
Thursday 4th May saw the official opening of Hertel’s fabrication facility for the Gorgon Project, Western Australia.
Hertel Modern’s location in Perth has been converted specially for the project, and the official opening included an inspection by the client Chevron and Kellogg JV Gorgon (KJVG).
The facility includes a Fastwire profile cutting machine to convert insulation materials from the block into pipe sections and vessel lags.
The dedicated insulation and sheet metal fabrication workshop has to meet very stringent quarantine requirements, put in place to protect environment of Barrow Island – the location of the plant – which is a Class A Nature Reserve. The aim is to prevent the introduction of plants and animals that are not native to the island.
This quarantine programme is acknowledged by the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority as “likely to be the world’s best practice.”
Hertel Modern, the Australian arm of Hertel, was awarded the contract in December 2011 to deliver painting, insulation and fireproofing services.
Fabrication is taking place in Hertel Modern’s facility in Malaga, Perth, which is one of the largest sheet metal facilities in Western Australia. Alongside this, installation on equipment and pre-assemblies is taking place at the Australian Marine Complex, as well as module interconnections and final installation on site at Barrow Island.
