Styron is one of the largest synthetic rubber producers in Europe. The company’s synthetic rubber business began in Schkopau, Germany, with the first large-scale production of synthetic rubber in 1937. In 2012, Styron started up a new SSBR -Solution Styrene Butadiene Rubber- manufacturing facility in Schkopau. The additional capacity will allow Styron to help customers around the world meet the increasing demand for high performance tires
Hertel GmbH Leipzig has been awarded the contract for the project “Quadriga” in Schkopau by Styron Deutschland GmbH. The scope of the project was the construction of a fourth production line (D-Train) for the Solution Elastomer installation.
Hertel’s services for this project included project management, prefabrication and assembly of a pipeline construction, procurement and installation of the supporting steel structure, equipment installation as well as the coordination of subcontractors for non-destructive testing of materials, scaffolding, painting, heat tracing and insulation. Since the beginning of 2013 Hertel furthermore managed the material for all activities involved.
Hertel succeeded in managing the project without any safety alerts or accidents and completed the project within the required timeframe. Satisfied with the performance delivered, Styron awarded Hertel with subsequent projects, such as pipeline construction for “Units 600” and “Pollux”, the construction of a new butadiene distillation plant. Until now Hertel installed more than 600 tons of piping material, made about 30,000 welds and installed over 20 kilometers of pipelines at the Schkopau site.
As subsequent projects Hertel will manage the "Nemo Light" project and "Generation 4". Both projects will be implemented as component projects with the complexity that assembly will take place at plants in operation.
The projects in Schkopau performed by Hertel were characterized by the smooth coordination of all trades involved delivering the projects of Styron Germany safe and within the required timeframe.
