Remove corrosion under the insulation
In early 2012, Sitech Services started a project in the DSM ANON factory in Geleen to track and remove corrosion under the insulation. In the early stages, Hertel examined the wall thickness of the equipment, in particular the insulated parts. The examination showed problems with two 38 metre high columns. The wall thickness of the columns was so alarming that they needed to be replaced. This had to be done during the production stop, which was planned only six weeks after the investigation.
Hertel was also asked to build the scaffolding, as well as remove and replace the old insulation within a short period of only three weeks.
Two colums insulated with 1,800 cubic metres
After the columns had been delivered and installed by the mechanical contractor, insulation could be started. The two columns were insulated in time with a total surface area of nearly 1,800 cubic metres. The project became even more complicated when Sitech Services requested if the insulation could be designed in such a way that all platforms could be installed after the scaffolding was removed. This is not normal practice.
Yet another challenge was the old insulation, which was too thin. Thicker material was required, but there was not enough space available. On top of this, the supports of the platforms were located deep within the insulation layer. We had to finish these separately during the installation of the platforms.
Hub Moonen, Operational manager Hertel: "Through daily coordination Hertel and Sitech were able to solve any bottlenecks immediately.”
Project safety plan
HSEQ was – as always - our highest priority. We prepared a project safety plan which was discussed in detail with all involved parties. Sitech also participated in additionel RIEs. Through daily coordination Hertel and Sitech were able to solve any bottlenecks immediately.
Oud added value
On time delivery of services
The two columns were insulated on time with a total surface area of nearly 1,800 cubic metres.
Quick execution of project during production stop
Within two weeks the columns were scaffolded and the insulation was removed.
Top priority HSEQ
