Safety culture on show at Pearl GTL Qatar

Hertel’s annual safety day in Qatar formed a good opportunity for Hertel’s Group HSE Director Michael de Klerk to get acquainted to the Hertel team at Shell Pearl GTL.

Operations Manager Jason Pearce and HSEQ Manager John Sheerin welcomed Michael to the site, who was accompanied by recently appointed members of the Middle East team Wichard Huigen and Michiel Wolters, Managing Director and Regional Finance Director respectively.

The day began with a toolbox talk, giving the opportunity to engage with the workforce and gain an insight into daily life on site.

Jason explains: “It’s around 30 degrees here at the minute; that’s a good summer in most countries in Europe. In the next few months that will rise to between 50-60 degrees. It was good that our guests get to experience the extreme heat conditions that we face. To manage this with all of the PPE and extra kit like breathing apparatus requires a great deal of focus and concentration on safety.”

This year saw the launch of a safety mascot for the site, Herly, brainchild of Jason, John, and HSE Officer Rhoky Reyes.

“Herly is helping us on Shell Pearl GTL work towards Goal Zero, with no recordable incidents and pride inproduction” says Jason. “There is a lot of activity going on around the site, and I firmly believe that this initiative will bring us better control for excellence in safety and performance that Hertel are known for.

“We have had a fantastic 15 months on Pearl. We put a great deal of effort into alignment under a shared vision of safety and responsibility. We motivate our people to perform, rather than rely on an authoritative approach. This approach has proven to work well, with people rising to the challenge.”

The day ended with a celebration. Ten awards were presented, ranging from best safety performance, best scaffolder, to best supervisor of the year.

“Through a combination of focusing on the hearts and minds of our people, and ensuring that they have the right training to develop and have a personal passion for safety, we can create the safest possible working environment for all. Honesty, integrity and respect for people sums it up.

“This is what differentiates Hertel in terms of how we treat our people,” concludes Jason. “Hertel’s value for safety is a key part of the culture here on Shell Pearl GTL.”
