In 2010, Hertel carried out a project to insulate six kilometres of piping on the BP Valhall platform with Ulva Shield insulation, a material that is especially suitable for protecting pipe work against corrosion in particularly wet weather conditions.

The harsh winter frost made painting the pipework impossible, potentially causing delays to the project.

Hertel came up with a solution – the application of a layer of aluminium foil has the same effect as paint, and was applied over the entire six kilometres. This brought the project back on-time, allowing the insulation project to continue immediately.
