Recent years have seen Hertel’s Cryogenic insulation expertise employed in major LNG terminals in Europe.

The Hertel LNG Competence Centre allows us to bring together the experience we have within the business to help us support our clients globally. It also means we can share developments we have made to improve the productive application of cryogenic insulation.
In order to guarantee the LNG cold temperature of -160°C, high-quality insulation applied in accordance with strict specifications is essential. Insulation systems consisting of Polyisocyanurate (PIR) rigid foam or cellular glass insulation, applied in multiple layers, in combination with high performance vapour barriers are used in order to produce the necessary degree of insulation.
Mechanical and weather protection to the installed insulation is achieved by the application of specified cladding materials, which include stainless steel; Aluminised steel or UV cured GRP.
The Polyisocyanurate (PIR) rigid foam used for pipe, equipment and storage tank insulation is produced specifically for use in LNG insulation systems, and has to have the required mechanical properties in order to accommodate the thermal stresses involved, in addition to possessing the necessary thermal properties.
Cellular glass insulation is also used for cold insulation of pipe work, equipment, storage tanks, and ships. Cellular glass is a lightweight material consisting of millions of packed glass cells. Each glass cell provides long-term performance, and together it can insulate the material under all possible conditions.
These materials are used in both the onsite insulation application to pipe work and equipment and the offsite pre-insulation of pipe work and equipment and are applied in strict accordance with LNG industry standards specifications which include the Shell DEP, CINI, Chevron.
Installation of materials is by operatives fully trained in LNG insulation application and strict quality control procedures are followed during installation.
