First contract underway in Azerbaijan
On Friday 27th January, Hertel were awarded their first contract in Azerbaijan.
The contract with Caspian Drilling Company (CDC), part of SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic), involves overhaul work on the Istiglal semi-submersible offshore drilling rig. Upgraded in 1998 to meet the demanding Shah Daniz requirements, the Istiglal is chartered to BP, Agip and Chevron amongst others for the drilling of new wells in the Azerbaijan section of the Caspian Sea.
Taking place in the Deep Water Jacket Factory (formerly SPS) in the Azerbaijani capital Baku, the scope of work for Hertel includes scaffolding, blasting and coating. With a manpower of 80, the project is scheduled to take around 30-35 days.
Hertel entered the Caspian region in 2009 with the acquisition of PFP Caspian in Kazakhstan, and a new start-up in Azerbaijan led by Eldar Azakov. Significant investments are being made in the offshore industry in the region in the coming years. This contract marks the first step by Hertel in bringing its services to Azerbaijan, complementing the growing services offered in the Caspian region in Kazakhstan.
John Potts, Management Board director: “Our team in Baku have put the foundations in place to build a sustainable business for Hertel in Azerbaijan. The CIS is a key strategic region for customers that we work for in our existing markets as well as customers that are new to Hertel. We’ve got the right people with the right skills in place to support our customers in running their project and maintenance works smoothly and safely in Azerbaijan, and I’m confident of a long and prosperous future in the region.”
