Thermography

Process

Under the denomination ‘Plant Integrity’, Hertel markets industrial thermography services.

Thermography

Depending on the purpose for which thermography is used, Hertel currently differentiates between four different types of scans.

The Guarantee Scan measures the quality of newly fitted insulation, the Pre-turnaround Scan shows which sections of a plant are due for major maintenance (and which ones are not), the Integrity Scan brings invisible corrosion problems to light and the Insulation Energy Scan renders energy leaks visible and quantifiable.

Guarantee Scan

Measures the quality of newly fitted insulation. Hertel offers the Guarantee Scan as an extra security for its own insulation work but can also perform scans on insulation fitted by others.

An additional advantage is that the Guarantee Scan also acts as a zero-measurement; if the thermal image changes after a certain period of time, it may point to a problem which may still be solved preventatively.

Pre-turnaround Scan

Scan as a preparation for major maintenance works which are carried out every few years.

The thermographic image of the installation shows which parts should be tackled and which parts can be left alone. This means that in a lot of cases far less dismantling needs to be done and that the maintenance costs decrease.

Integrity Scan

Measurement which detects corrosion under insulation. A lot of petrochemical plants are fitted with old insulation. Over the course of time this can draw moisture and the installation may corrode. Up until now the only way to detect corrosion was by removing the insulation.

Thanks to thermography, corrosion can be detected in a nondestructive way. In fact, corrosion and humidity lead to a change in the insulating value which becomes visible on the thermal image. During the Integrity Scan the extent and the risk of corrosion can also be assessed.

Insulation Energy Scan

Measures the loss of energy through an installation.

This scan is combined with a calculation of the losses when suitable insulation is fitted and can be used to minimize the emissions of an installation.
